Tips to Help Transition Your Summer Wardrobe To Fall

Hello my fashionable friends,

It’s always a little sad when the summer ends and we begin transitioning to the fall. It starts getting dark a little earlier and we have to start gearing up for the cooler weather.

This summer has been particularly challenging due to the COVID pandemic. Most people I know haven't had a lot of opportunities to get out, have fun and wear their cute summer outfits. However, this provides an opportunity to get creative and remix our summer outfits so we can continue wearing them into the fall.

These six tips will help you extend the life of your summer pieces. I have also provided links for you to shop, to round out your “summer-to-fall” wardrobe.

1. Add a Jacket

Throw a denim jacket, a moto jacket, or leather blazer over a summer dress or romper, and pair it with boots and tights. A jacket or cover up adds layers, providing warmth for the cooler temperatures, and the contrast of the denim and leather add texture and depth to the look.

2. Wear Boots

Pair your summery tops with jeans and boots. Top off with a leather jacket or slouchy cardigan. Boots, sweaters, and leather jackets automatically signal cooler temperatures, allowing you to wear your lighter pieces into the fall.

3. Keep Wearing Your Shorts

Continue wearing your shorts during the cooler weather with tights or leggings, which will provide coverage for your legs. Try a blazer with leather shorts and complete the look with a pair of over the knee or ankle boots.

4. Wear White After Labor Day

White is not just for the summer anymore. Pair your white skirts, jeans, and dresses with deeper colors to make them more autumnal. Great colors to consider include pumpkin, mustard, brown and wine.

 5. Extend the Life of Your Maxi Dresses

Throw a cropped sweater or button down shirt on top of your maxi dresses or wear a fitted turtleneck underneath. The added layers provide you with the extra coverage the cooler temperatures require.

 6. Add Texture

Pair your lighter weight pieces with more textured fabrics like wool, leather, suede, and corduroy. The heaviness of these fabrics provides a nice counterbalance to the lighter fabrics, creating a look that works well in the cooler weather.

The keys to extending the life of your summer pieces are:

  • Incorporating richer colors into your wardrobe

  • Pairing your pieces with heavier weights and textures

  • Throwing on a pair of boots

Cross-season dressing is not only a great way to increase the number of times you can wear an item, but it can encourage you to think creatively about different outfit combinations.
