Happy Saturday everyone!

A few months ago, I met a fellow fashion lover named Kate Breen on Instagram. She’s a personal stylist, passionate thrifter, and she offered to guide me through the thrifting process.

Last weekend we connected, and I went on my first official thrifting adventure. I had a great time, picked up some great pieces — and earlier this week, Kate and I did an Instagram Live event where we discussed the experience.

Here are the top seven things I learned.

Seven Tips to Keep in Mind While Thrifting

  1. Dress for the occasion: Kate advised me to dress in form-fitting clothing, so I can easily try on clothes out in the open. Fitting rooms aren’t always available. (So I wore a catsuit, crocs, and an animal print blazer.)

  2. Develop a strategy: Arrive early, identify which sections you’d like to visit first, and whatever you think you may like, throw it in your cart and evaluate it later.

  3. Be patient: It may take a little while to go through the racks, so a little patience can help you score some great items.

  4. Have an open mind: Don’t get hung up on the sizes on the tags; evaluate the clothing based on how it fits.

  5. Get creative: Try to be forward-thinking and visualize how you can pair your finds with the already existing pieces in your wardrobe. You also want to think about how you can wear those items in different ways.

  6. Be forward-looking: Thrifting is great for finding unexpected and unique items. If you find something you like and it may work for a future event or occasion, purchase it and save it for later.

  7. Resist the urge: Just because something is inexpensive, doesn’t mean it’s a good buy. Be discerning with your purchases and only buy things you really love.

BONUS TIP: Kate also shared this great tip. If you’ve gained a few extra pounds over the pandemic — or for any other reason — consider thrifting. It’s an inexpensive way to add items to your wardrobe while you shed the extra weight.
