Hello my fashionable friends,

We can’t talk about fashion without addressing one of the critical components of a look and that’s “fit.” When your clothes fit well, that makes great pieces look even better. For women with a full bustline, it can be a challenge to “dress your breasts.” Issues can range from wearing a different size on the top than you do on the bottom, it may be difficult to find button-down shirts that don’t gap, or perhaps you just don’t know which styles are the most flattering.

This goal of this post is to highlight great styles for full-breasted women, including those who want to find pieces that fit well, and for those who want to accentuate and highlight their curves.

  1. Start With a Great-fitting Bra

A great-fitting bra sets the tone for everything you put on. You wouldn’t build a house without a great foundation, so why wouldn’t you invest in supportive bras?

Consider getting fitted by a professional who will measure you and recommend the best styles. I got a professional bra-fitting at Nordstrom several years ago and it changed my life. Prior to the that, I was wearing the wrong size and the wrong styles. The fitting was also a crash course in how a bra works. I learned that support comes from the band and not the straps. I also learned that when purchasing a bra I should ensure it fits well using the outermost hooks, so when the elastic eventually stretches, I have the option to tighten the band!

I had no idea…

Finding great bras will require a monetary investment, but it’s absolutely worth it. Your clothes will look great and “the girls” will be appreciative. So go out, get your professional fitting or take your own measurements using this guide from Nordstrom. You will be walked through the process and get answers to frequently asked questions about bras and fit.

Once you know your size, you can select styles that support, enhance, and showcase your breasts in the best way possible.

Shop Bras

Brands like Elomi, Panache, and Glamorise provide great coverage and support, and are available in a range of sizes. They’re also great to look at!

Now that you know how to select a supportive foundation, it’s time to dive into six tips I’ve outlined that can help you look your best.

2. Choose Open Necklines

Having big breasts does not mean you have to hide your assets or look matronly. Chances are, if your breasts are big, people are going to see them regardless of what you wear. Sporting baggy clothes and attempting to conceal your breasts can often make you look heavier and can take away from your curves.

Blouses, tops, and sweaters with open necklines are your friend, and here’s why. The continuous flow of fabric that covers fuller bustlines will conceal the decolletage, which is a slimming area. Open necklines break up the monotony of the fabric, which can at times give a matronly appearance—especially if the fabric is bulky and creates a uniboob.

Styles with V-neck, sweetheart, or scoop necks show a little skin, open up the neckline and balance your look. If it’s not the time or place to expose cleavage, or if that’s out of your comfort zone, choose necklines that have a more modest plunge, or throw a fitted tank underneath.

3. Break Up the Fabric

If you prefer tops with higher necklines, consider breaking up the fabric with a statement necklace or pendant. Have the necklace or pendant sit between your collarbone and your breasts, so the piece does not add bulk to your bustline.

Another way to break up the fabric is to wear a top with a keyhole opening or other cutout in the middle area.

These tactics work best with thinner and more form-fitting fabrics because they highlight your shape.

4. Define Your Waistline

Cinch your waist and create volume on the bottom using A-line cuts, circle skirts, or pants with slash pockets. The balance you create between your upper and lower halves will create a harmonious look.

Wrap tops, dresses, and jumpsuits are great for defining your waistline and create a nice open neckline. Wrap styles with adjustable belts are a smart option because they allow you to customize the fit of your garments. And if you’re looking for a top to hide your midsection, try peplum-style wrap tops with a looser bottom.

5. Consider Custom-made Clothing

Getting custom-made clothing is a fantastic option for those who want the perfect fit. It’s also a great way to add unique pieces to your wardrobe. Modern Tailor and Sumissura allow you to design your own dress shirts and tops for the perfect fit. You can also consider a local tailor to create your custom pieces.

6. Reveal, Don’t Conceal

If you want to showcase your curves, consider stretchy fabrics that hug your body, but don’t add bulk. In instances where you want to accentuate your breasts and body, consider styles like bodycon and formfitting dresses.

Avoid the Following

Now that you know what to wear, let’s talk about styles and fabrics that may not be the most flattering. Consider avoiding the following:

7. Turtlenecks or other styles with high necklines. However, these styles are not off limits if you want to highlight your shape. If that’s your goal, select a stretchy or other form-fitting fabric that doesn’t add bulk.

8. Double-breasted jackets and coats—the lapels often meet right over your breasts and can make them look larger.

9. Button-down shirts and blazers that pull and gap. Select styles that contain stretchy fibers or consider custom-made pieces.

10. Boxy shapeless tops, sweaters, and jackets that don’t define your waistline: They can hang and add unnecessary volume in your midsection

Flattering Tops, Dresses, and Jumpsuits
