Hello fashionistas and style enthusiasts!

If you have been following me for a while, you know I am a strong believer in the power of style. Great style can help you feel good about yourself, allow you to stand out in a sea of “sameness,” and even shape peoples’ perceptions about you.

Defining your personal style is a journey that usually takes years — and it will continue to evolve over time. The process requires self-awareness, experimentation, courage, and patience. If you don’t know how to “step into your style,” here are five tips to get you started.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU FIND YOUR FABULOUS

1) Take an honest assessment of yourself. What are your likes, dislikes, and style preferences? What looks good on you? Understand what makes you feel happy, comfortable, glamourous, sexy, chic, or whatever it is you want to feel. Then wear those things.

2) Take your lifestyle into consideration. How do you spend most of your days and what is the “dress code?” Understanding that there’s a time and place for everything will help guide your sartorial selections. In some cases, you’ll have a little flexibility to break the rules, but first you have to understand what they are.

3) Trust your own instincts. Stop listening to all the outside influences. As humans— and for women in particular — we are often expected to look a certain way. That can vary based on any number of factors. But guess what? You don’t have to feed into that. You can be stylish at any age, size, shape, or price point.

4) Start thinking more creatively. While working with women of varying backgrounds, I’ve noticed a recurring theme. We often limit ourselves, in terms of how we think of our wardrobes. We want to save certain pieces for special occasions, we wear things the same way repeatedly, we’re afraid or unwilling to experiment with different colors or styles, or we think we have to play it safe.

Mix it up! You can wear sequins in the daytime, or put on those fancy shoes “just because.” You can pair your more expensive pieces with more casual items, you can mix patterns and colors, and dress up just to run to the grocery store. Why not?

5) Shop your closet. Many of us already own more clothing than we know what to do with. I’ve heard that most people wear 20% of their clothing 80% of the time. That’s INSANE. Wear your clothing. It’s hanging in your closet just begging to be included in your fashion rotation.

When there’s a special occasion, before you start shopping online or visiting your favorite boutique or store - SHOP YOUR CLOSET! You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by the number of options staring you right in the face.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Great style is for everyone and it’s within your reach. One of the best gifts you can give yourself is leaning into all the things that make you look and feel your best - and style plays a part in that.
