Style Tips for Menopausal Women
One of my core beliefs is that style is for everyone. Regardless of your age, stature, size, or station in life — great style can be leveraged to improve your appearance and make you feel good about yourself.
As we go through the various stages of life, our style typically evolves. And that evolution can be based on many things, including our careers, our bodies, our mental and emotional state, and more.
During perimenopause and menopause, our bodies can go through a series of changes, including hot flashes and midsection weight gain — which can impact how we feel and look in our clothing. Being strategic about how you dress during this life stage can help you stay fashionable and feel more comfortable at the same time.
Six Style Tips for Menopausal Women
1. Wear breathable natural fabrics. Menopause can cause your body temperature to fluctuate quickly and drastically, so consider wearing fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk — that either absorb sweat or draw it away from your skin — allowing you to cool off.
2. Wear layers. Dressing in layers can help you quickly respond to rising and cooling body temperatures. When you feel yourself overheating, simply remove a layer, and if you get too cool, add a layer.
3. Choose flowy non-restrictive styles. I’m not talking about the big shapeless muumuus of years past. Consider stylish flowy tops, dresses, skirts, and pants that allow air to circulate and keep you cool.
4. Create some midsection magic. To accommodate an expanded midsection, wear A-line tops, peplum styles, tops and dresses with ruching, as well as skirts and pants with elastic waistbands.
If you cringed at the thought of wearing clothing with an elastic waistband, relax — fortunately, there are plenty of flattering skirt and pant options that include either full or partial waistbands.
5. Change your hair. Maybe it’s time to try something different like a hair cut, a new color, or going natural. Perhaps you want to stop coloring your hair, or want to try a low-maintenance hairstyle. A new hairstyle can improve your look and give you a confidence boost.
6. Take care of yourself. Major life changes can have a tremendous impact on your physical and psychological well-being. Try to maintain a positive outlook, and take care of your mind, body, and emotional well-being.
Final Thoughts
Going through menopause is not a reason to retire your style sensibilities. Continue choosing styles, colors, and fabrics that make you look and feel great. Fashion is NOT just for the young — it’s for anyone who’s willing to put in the effort.
