What “Sex and the City” Taught Me About Style

When it comes to staying motivated to look my best, I seek style inspiration from everywhere — including celebrities, magazines, social media, everyday people, and TV shows. During the Sex and the City series run, I tuned in weekly to see what Carrie Bradshaw would be wearing — and the fashions did not disappoint.

I learned so much about style from that show, and now that the reboot And Just Like That, is here — it has me reflecting on those lessons.

The Top 5 Things “Sex and the City” Taught Me About Style

1. It’s perfectly fine to make unconventional style choices.

Early in the series, I didn’t “get” some of Carrie’s outfits. Some of her color combinations, the pairing of what seemed like odd pieces, and her affinity for eclectic and unique clothing raised my brow a time or two.

Eventually I caught on. I realized that Carrie leaned into her individuality and used fashion to express her unique way of looking at the world. There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to style because it’s so personal. The only way to do it “right” is to wear what makes you feel alive.

2. Being overdressed is totally acceptable, as long as you look and feel great.

High heels for dog walking? A satin ball-skirt during the day? Carrie did it all. And why not?

After all we’ve been through the past couple of years, and with so few opportunities to get dressed up, I encourage you to wear your fabulous and fancy clothing, shoes, and accessories “just because.”

It doesn’t matter if there isn’t a “special occasion.” Overdressed is much better than being underdressed.

3. A tulle skirt is ALWAYS a great idea.

Carrie wore a few different versions over the course of the series, and she set in motion the resurgence of that magical piece, which has now become a wardrobe staple for women everywhere.

4. Shoes are magical! Okay, admittedly I already knew this. But it’s nice to see a “sole sister” who feels as passionately about shoes as I do. There is great power in an amazing pair of shoes. They can instantly elevate the look of an inexpensive, plain, or unmemorable outfit.

5. Thrifting is where it’s at. In the first Sex and the City movie, Jennifer Hudson’s character, Louise, rented luxury bags. Fast forward to 2022, And Just Like That, has been tackling all sorts of modern day issues, including the embracing of sustainable fashion. Many of the outfits worn by the characters have been purchased from thrift and consignment shops — and they’re fabulous.

Now onto the fun stuff…

Where to Buy Carrie’s “Wedding Shoes”

You remember Carrie’s wedding shoes, right? They were an immediate classic, they made an appearance in the reboot, and are still available for purchase.

The wedding shoes

They’re available in a variety of colors/fabrics.

They’re also available in a few different heel heights.

And did you know that Sarah Jessica Parker has her own brand of shoes? If the Manolo Blahnik prices give you heartburn, The SJP shoes are equally gorgeous — and a few hundred dollars cheaper.

The brand even carries a style that is similar to Carrie’s wedding shoes.
