Five tips to help with your holiday outfit planning

Hi fashionistas,

Holiday season is here and many of us have already started planning our outfits. And others, including me, have not. :-(

The good news is, there is still enough time to pull together cute looks for all the December festivities.

Here are 5 tips to get you started.

1.

Shop your closet

A little creativity can help bring your existing pieces to life. Do you have fancy items that can be restyled to create a new look?

Ladies, it’s okay to wear a fancy garment or outfit more than once. Especially if you’re able to remix it.

Here are some ideas to consider.

  • Layer a sparkly mini dress over leggings. Add a belt to give it a tunic-like effect. Pair with boots.

  • Pair a fancy ball skirt with a t-shirt and combat or ankle boots, or a cool pair of sneakers. Add a denim jacket or blazer.

  • Pair a velvet blazer with a t-shirt, tank, or camisole. Wear with a great-fitting pair of jeans, ankle boots or strappy sandals.

  • Open a button down dress and wear it over a cat suit. Belt it for structure.

  • Wear a pair of fancy leggings, a graphic tee and a cute pair of sneakers. Add a kimono or duster for a dramatic effect.

Not every holiday occasion calls for “black tie” attire, so have fun with your style. Personalize your look. Make it fun and interesting.

2.

Wear a bold print or non-traditional holiday color

Red, green, black, silver, and gold are all amazing holiday colors. They’re also very common holiday colors.

Consider taking things in a different direction and wearing a non-traditional color or print. You’ll be sure to turn heads with your interesting and unique take on holiday style.

  1. Colors to consider:

    1. Hot pink

    2. White

    3. Royal Blue

    4. Turquoise

    5. Mustard

  2. “Non-holiday” prints:

    1. Polka Dots

    2. Stripes

    3. Graphic Prints

    4. Animal Prints

    5. Ethnic Prints

3.

Choose comfortable pieces

It is possible to look cute and feel comfortable.

  • Select clothes that contain stretchy fabric and/or elastic waistbands.

  • Wear jeans and a cute top/blazer/sweater for less fancy occasions.

  • Try looser fits like tunics, flowy pants, skirts, and dresses.

4. Rent, don’t buy!

If you’re not able to restyle your clothes and don’t want to purchase outfits for one-time use, rent them. There are a number of clothing rental services that can make it easy for you to look fabulous without the long term commitment.

The services include free expedited shipping, dry cleaning, and the ability to swap out items. Some include the rental of accessories, plus sizes, and maternity fashions.

5.

Shop at consignment or thrift shops

Shopping at thrift or consignment stores is another great option. You can find unique and cost-effective fashions for a fraction of their original prices.

Shop stores in your local area or try an online service such as ThredUp or The RealReal, Poshmark, or Vestiaire Collective.

Focus on what’s important

With a little creativity and planning, you can be fabulous consistently this holiday season, so if you haven’t gotten started already, it’s time to start thinking about your holiday style.

The holidays can be a great time for connecting with friends and family. Of course we want to look cute for all of our holiday events, but it’s important to focus on the real benefits of connecting with family and friends.
