My Birthday Outfits
Hi fashionistas,
Last month I celebrated my 50th birthday, and to commemorate the occasion, I posed for a boudoir photo shoot, and I hosted a birthday party. For my party, I wore two outfits and I’m including all the details in this post.
On the night of the party, I had so much fun dancing and socializing with my guests, I didn’t get head-to-toe outfit pix, so I did a photo shoot after the party to memorialize the two looks.
OUTFIT NUMBER ONE
The color scheme was black and white with gold accents, and I asked my guests to dress in black and white. (For those who don’t know, it’s my favorite color combination.)
Because I have an ongoing love affair with tulle skirts, I’m sure people expected me to wear one, but I decided to go in a different direction. I chose a black sequin jumpsuit by Zhivago , white pumps with a black sequin bow (Jeffrey Campbell, old), gold doorknocker earrings by Hoop Mobb, and green crystal cocktail ring by Swarovski.
The jumpsuit was a great choice because it was as comfortable as it is striking. AND I got it for a fraction of it’s original price. I periodically peruse the sale section of Neiman Marcus and they have great dresses and jumpsuits that are often significantly below their original retail price. The downside is the sizes are often limited, but I’ve had a lot of success over the years — getting great designer pieces at a more affordable price point.
OUTFIT NUMBER TWO
When I first saw Beyonce in that beautiful golden dress in the "Hold Up" music video, I along with many other women, lusted after that type of look. The color, the flowiness of the dress, the vibrance, and the "freedom" it represented resonated with me. I never looked for or purchased a similar dress, but the idea of it was seared into my brain.
When I began shopping for birthday party looks, I really wanted to do a gold chain link mini dress (think Toni Braxton's chain dress in the He Wasn't Man Enough For Me video, but in gold.) I thought I could pull that off, (perhaps I was being a little delusional), but I didn't find what I was looking for anyway…
One day I was just minding my business on the internet and saw this beautiful dress at Nordstrom. I had seen the black version of the dress early in the year and fell in love with it, but didn't know how practical the sleeves would be. Then I saw it again in cream and gold on Sabra from My Style is My Brand and loved it even more. AND it's by a BLACK designer. AND it reminds me of the dress Beyonce wore in the "Hold Up" video. (the color, the movement, the power.)
When I saw it in gold, the universe was speaking to me, so I bought it.
The dress reminds me of the 1970s...my decade. And because it's so voluminous, I wanted a chunkier heel to balance out all the fabric. (The chunky platform is also very 1970s)
I wore a delicate necklace (gift from my mother), large gold hoops (from the local beauty supply store), and two statement rings from Swarovski.
You can shop the look below:
I considered wearing a third outfit for my party, but decided it would be too much. Maybe next time.
Thanks for reading.
